The Original Sturdy Gal Turns 80, Or, Saturday Morning at 10:03

80th Birthday Party Celebration for a Sturdy Gal

We rolled straight from a lovely, small, simple Thanksgiving into a birthday party for the original, iconic Sturdy Gal. My mother’s younger sister turns 80 this year, and her 3 sons and their wives organized a surprise dinner for her with 65 guests. It was just wonderful. My aunt was toasted and honored, for her generosity, her caring, her intelligence, her competence. Stories ranged from the ditch she dug recently to get at a couple of broken pipes, to her games of “Sardines” with great-nieces and nephews, to those times she took in lonely family members and fed them, well. Really, an occasion of joy and wonderment, for someone wholly deserving.

My love to you, Aunt L. Long may you thrive and inspire.

Have a great weekend everyone.

  1. What a wonderful surprise her son’s and daughter’s in law organized for her. The room looks lovely. What’d you wear? Curious if you’d care to share.

    1. @kathy, Funny you should ask:). I felt very festive, and hence was much more colorful than usual. My dark pink and blue/purple patterned silk jersey dress by Tory Burch, very dark pink suede Stuart Weitzman pumps, the powder blue MaxMara peacoat, and a pink/white zig-zag long woven scarf. Just some bronze pearl studs as jewelry.

  2. A belated Happy Birthday to your Aunt L – long may she continue to lead the way for Sturdy Gals the world-over. I hope I am still able to dig a ditch or help with repairs when I reach that age!

  3. It was such fun to see her happily and gently surprised, and to enjoy all the family togetherness! Are you responsible for the lovely flower arrangements on the tables? I brought one home, and it has been thoroughly enjoyed for a full week since the party.

    1. @Linda K, Hello dear cousin! I was only responsible for choosing orange flowers and sky blue tables, and suggesting the lit trees. The florist took over from there – I am so glad you got to keep and enjoy one of the centerpieces. It was wonderful to see you.
