Two of my favorite bloggers wrote about Louis Vuitton just recently.
First, we have the INIMITABLE Maximinimus, on about LV trunks. And yes, I did need to use the vociferous upper case. I had lunch with Maxi last week and the man is sui generis. Writes the heck out of everything and gives good advice, too.
Second, we have Miss Sophie, of Les Anti-Modernes, with a brief discourse on her Sofia bag. Miss Sophie is in Shanghai right now, so I didn’t have lunch with her at all.
Quite sneaky, those Vuittons. Capitalizing on society’s love for logo-led luxury, but quite capable of the Real Deal. Don’t count out the French economy, if Arnault has anything to say about it.

INTERESTING Arnault link!
I love the bag Miss Sophie has, and wanted it the minute it was debuted.
But, isn’t it about $4K?
How interesting. We have a large old LV trunk similar to the one in size in the fifth picture. Whoever the original owner was apparently didn’t want anyone to know their name because they painted over it in red paint. Very intriguing.
I would love to read this book. I met Claude Vuitton once in Houston when the Vuitton’s still owned the company.

When my husband still raced for a living, he did the Louis Vuitton Cup. Being blissfully ignorant of anything remotely status symbol-y or logo-ed, he asked one of his buddies, “so, who is this Louis Panache guy anyway?
I like your husband. BTW, I had an uncle and step-uncle who raced on the Cape…
Once in Newport, we did an “upstairs-downstairs” tour of one of the mansions. They had an entire room in the basement filled top to bottom with the family’s vintage Vuitton luggage and trunks. It was amazing to see.
As long as there are LV knockoffs, the real ones will not reside in my house. Better a real Vera Bradley than a fake Vuitton. Besides, I really think they are purely status items.
But guess who I did indeed very much have drinks with, pre-book launch? Miss Meg Keene, who is even more marvelous that I ever could have imagined. I am terribly jealous of SF in that she holds BOTH OF YOU in her geographic clutches. Not fair. We also had a long talk about Business. And you’ll be happy to know the value of your painting has, er, tripled in the past four months. Good timing, L.
Also, also. Would love your thoughts on my wee feminist post today. I’m sure you have LOTS to say about all this. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt and all. xo
My talent is recognizing talent:). Congrats, dear Lily.
Lois Vuitton has never been one of my favorites, but my isn’t that Sophia bag gorgeous!
A dear friend uses his aunt’s LV steamer trunk as a coffee table and I love it. However, I find the brown LV handbags overexposed; they do not incite even a whiff of longing.
I read the Maximus blog and was astounded at the wide variety of trunks (and fold up beds) that were possible.
The Sofia bag looks great. The other blog post by Maxi has a lot of excellent photos and information, I’ll have to check back and re-read when I have more time. I know nothing about the history of LV.
Well, you already know my thoughts about LV, although those sentiments do not extend to the trunks and other travel goods, the older th ebtter, especially if pre-1970. I have seen the book and it *is* a gorgeous volume, highly giftable in addition to providing great historical info. (Besides, you know how I dote on Maximinimus.)
On the other hand, that bag is just drop-dead beautiful, Miss Sophie picked one for a lifetime of service.
Sending you a smile,

Can’t do the LV thing. Even back in the day, the 1980s, I couldn’t bring my myself to do it. But I appreciate its fabulousness. My granny had some, but anything after the 1950s seems a bit, well, crass to me.
Is LV even leather? The ones I’ve seen – and my experience is not vast – look plastic.
I am not a big fan of visible logos. If someone wants me to advertise his product, he can pay me.
LV luggage would be a luxe treat!
I was tagged by mater a few days ago and now I am passing it on to you.
I hope that you will participate. It took me awhile to come up with a few questions. I thought of you with the first one!

I love the quality of their work, it just slays me. It’s funny 10 years ago when I was starting out designing bags I was asked to take my logo off, and now everyone has gone logo crazy again…kind of fun to be along for the ride!

p.s. are you on facebook? I just rejoined.
The old LV trunks are pretty amazing…reminds me of an era of travel I wish would come back…Steamer Ship!
The Sophia bag was pretty neat, reminded me of a doctors bag, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing really, I much prefer it to the ginormous and gaudy monster bags of late !
