The Best Possible Mother’s Day Present – You Already Know What It Is – Or, Saturday Morning at 8:23am

My husband brought my kids home for the weekend as a surprise Mother’s Day present. Well, a surprise with lead-up, as he told me they’d be coming yesterday morning so that I could have time to clean and shop.

He knows I like to nest.

The two of them, tall, grinning, sweet as sugar, arrived on my doorstep last night. When we were talking about weekend plans, I told them I’d just have to write a quick blog post this morning before any other adventures. My daughter said,

“Hop hop, clap clap.”

I had told them that upon hearing the news of their visit, I began to hop up and down clapping, saying, “My little pats of butter are coming home!” Then I ran through the house, clapping some more, pulling sheets from the beds and polishing mirrors. When they got here I hopped and clapped again.

We stayed up a while, sitting at the kitchen counter. I made them some dinner, we drank old red wine. Then we nestled into the living room for a few minutes. Eventually I went off to bed, only to emerge shortly and say, “Would you like me to tuck you in?” Someone answered, “Would you like to, Mama?” And I would, so I stood at the sink while they brushed their dear teeth. Then I my pulled up daughter’s sheets, kissed my son goodnight, and went back to bed.

Tea with my daughter this morning. My son and husband are still dozing.

Hop hop, clap clap, indeed. Have a wonderful weekend.

  1. Sweet, so sweet. I too keep stroking my son’s hair when he comes home, sniffing his neck, and just absorbing him as much as I can. The hugs do last longer after they’re 20.
    Happy Mother’s Day.

  2. The feeling of happiness I get from spending time with my kids and caring for them never ends…no matter how old. Happy Mothers Day…hopping and clapping with my son home and our family together for the weekend!

  3. I love this! Pinch their cheeks like my Italian great grandfather used to do and tell them its from all the blog ladies who love their mamma so much!

  4. You always seem so…calm, cool and self-possessed to me, that at first I couldn’t fathom you hopping and clapping with glee. Then I could, and was delighted.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day, Lisa.

    1. @Jan’s Sushi Bar, The calm and self-possession is an artifact of having time to think before I press publish. IRL I’m much more high-wire. But, I like your picture of me so don’t let me disturb it:).

  5. You have a real jewel of a husband! What an incredible, fabulous, perfect gift for you.

  6. Happy Mother’s Day!
You have THE very best husband and I am thrilled for you!

  7. Can’t think of a better, or more thoughtful present. Enjoy them and have a very Happy Mother’s Day.

  8. I can’t wait to have ‘pats of butter’ of my own someday. That is one of the cutest phrases I have ever heard for a reference to children. ::awwww:: Any story on that?

    Happy Mother’s Day, Twitter Mom.

    XO

  9. Have a wonderful day, Lisa. You have been blessed with something beyond privilege.

  10. The delight and love in this post brought tears to my eyes both times I read it — and compelled me to grab some cuddles with both of my 10 year old sons knowing that some day they will leave our nest and returns will be as special as you described.
