Two Quite Cute Things, Or, Saturday Morning at 8:41am

January in the Northern Hemisphere is a teeny time of year. We abstain, we center, we consider. On the other hand, some things are cute. And I like to share.

When we were in Hawaii last month, my daughter and I were hanging out in the hot tub by the pool, when we were joined by two women wearing identical bathing suits.

Turned out they were mother and daughter, and, furthermore, that the daughter had designed their garments. Who could resist? But even minus the backstory we had noticed the suit on the daughter before, and exclaimed to each other how much we liked it. The brand is Ellejay, named for the daughter whose initials are, wait for it, LJ. Available at Shopbop and Revolve, also Intermix, where I found the image above.

Another cute thing. Do you remember that I loved the red lipgloss by Lipstick Queen, name of “Medieval?” Thing is, in a move towards safer cosmetic ingredients, I gave it up. One day, randomly searching for “natural medieval queen duplicate,” or some such, I happened upon this review in Makeup Alley. And found my way subsequently to “Bitten,” at the Silk Naturals site. (Image from Silk Naturals.)

The packaging is perhaps the least glamorous I’ve ever seen. The name is printed on a thick papery kind of wrapper. Whoa.

I do not mind. (Image by Kacey M. on Makeup Alley. I color-corrected it, I hope she doesn’t mind.) What does this deeply pigmented lip balm cost you might ask? Since we always use a lot of adjectives when we talk? Four dollars and fifty cents. Let’s try that in numbers. $4.50.

Good stuff. I’d show you photo of me wearing it but I can’t locate my tube right now! Tragedy. If it’s not in any of my pockets or bags or down the back of the driver’s seat in my car – all the usual places – I’ll repurchase. Oh, and when I want more impact, I add this lip pencil #42 from Bite (currently out of stock). Bite’s line is also made from natural ingredients, in more colors than I would have thought possible. Bitten and Bite. I hadn’t even realized the connection ’til now.

Saturday mornings are so great – all the brain awake and the time to let it fly.

There you have it. Back to reflection on the state of humanity and the meaning of consciousness. In wine-dark colors. Love and a very, very happy weekend to all.

  1. Your Saturday mornings are my Saturday evenings…
Lovely cabernet red colours and nice stories
I didn’t comment last Saturday- your Dries Van Noten outfits are so beautiful- I love his dresses but it is something I don’t want to buy online-I want to feel the material and try on-but never had the luck to find “in vivo” the size or the model I like (especially when one has to travel abroad to even find his brand)

    1. @Dottoressa, I am honored to share your Saturday mornings:). I will say, I have gotten more comfortable ordering pieces like this online, having done so for the Christopher Kane I wore to my wedding rehearsal. If I don’t like it I just return it. Usually not too expensive, or even free, here in the USA.

  2. I love the thought of a mother and daughter in the same style swimsuit. I can see it now–I am slowly being nudged toward safer cosmetics. I will get there.

  3. Just what I needed on Saturday afternoon – no heavy mental lifting required on the weekend! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  4. I’ve been admiring Ellejay swimsuits online, but have been reluctant to order. I always worry, with my long torso, that I will get stuck with something. Lipsticks and swimsuits are such a cheerful thought on this dreary and rainy Saturday afternoon.

    1. @Mardel, Oh how interesting that you’d already seen the brand! I have to say, I just return them if they don’t fit. I find it’s almost always possible, and for not too much $.

  5. Lipstick….. Bobbi Brown has a luxe lip color….. Your Majesty …. that looks similar …. check it out. Also, my daughter and I want to go to Hawaii for Xmas next year. Which island and which resort did you go to….. and did you enjoy your time there?
    Thank you, Debbie

  6. Cute suit and the lipgloss has aroused my curiosity…$4.50 is a great price especially when compared to my current Chanel favourite.
Hope you find your lip gloss but if not you can easily replace it.
    Happy Saturday Lisa.

    1. @Leslie Lord, It’s such a great price. And somehow using it makes me feel like I’m doing good for the planet, the packaging is so small and simple. Who knows if that is the case of course;).

  7. I loved your “ every day make up” post. On a rather low day you cheered me up – thank you!

  8. I too liked the every day makeup, and have visited twice! I’ve even bought a boynger! Thanks!

  9. I used to use the same Lipstick Queen, at your recommendation, then gave it up because of the chemicals. I’ll try this brand. My granddaughter has taken to going into my purse to try on lipsticks, so I want to be extra cautious. Thanks for the tip.
Very cute swimsuit – love the color combo. xo

  10. Four dollars and fifty cents for that beautiful lipstick?!

I’m off to buy it right now. It’s gorgeous! Thank you. :)

    1. @Ann Gibson, You are so welcome! Just to make sure – it’s a tinted lip balm, so, richly pigmented but sheer. Did I make that clear? Should I edit the post?
