Good Things In Their Moment, Or, Saturday Morning at 8:27am

The news, which I have been sitting on until it was official, is that my son has sold his debut novel.  End of Life will be published by Harcourt Brace’s Mariner imprint, publication date TBD.

I will of course say more when the book comes out. For now I just want to congratulate him, and share my pride and joy with you. Over the years you’ve been more fun than a barrel of monkeys and so kind.

Patrick has been this person, with this capacity, since he was a tiny boy. Although he’s no longer chubby-cheeked with feet like little marshmallows, he has never in these 35 years trusted himself less than the world. He has worked hard. And as I have said before, the past decade has been tough for my family but hard times go and come, so I am taking this exact moment, on this very day, to fully feel pride and gratitude to the universe. Thanks, ‘Verse. Hope you don’t mind my informality.

I wish you all a very happy weekend.

  3. What fabulous news Lisa!! I am just so happy for your son. What an achievement! You have every reason to be very ver proud!

  4. Congratulations, Patrick! And hooray to his proud mom.

Thank you for sharing your joy, Lisa.

Looking forward to reading “End of Life.”

  5. Fabulous. As a novelist who sent 70 queries out before getting a publisher, I know how big this is. The market is very difficult right now, but it is also a time of possibility. Some folks are coming back to reading books, understanding their value.

  6. One Decade from Hell, followed by 1/4 Year of wild and joyous happiness – courtesy of your children.

Patrick’s knitted sculptures already drew wide acclaim over the past year or so – gallery shows, press reviews – and now this!

And may I say, the wedding photos of Patrick and his guy dazzled, they make such a handsome couple!

I’m happy for you, Lisa. Thank you for letting us in on your news!

    1. Terrible sentence: “One Decade from Hell, followed by 1/4 Year of wild and joyous happiness – courtesy of your children.”

Edited Version: “One Decade from Hell – courtesy of the Universe. One Quarter of a Year of Wild and Joyous Happiness – courtesy of your children.”

      There.

  7. WOW! Just a big fat WOW! Wonderful news for him and for you!!! Let’s all just bask in this for a while.

  8. I’m not sure if I’ve ever posted before — but what better reason? There’s great joy found in delighting in someone else’s joy. Huzzah!

  9. Congrats Patrick! And yes – soak in and enjoy this moment! Such a huge achievement – at any age – but 35 seems young to be able to do all the creating he does.

  10. To borrow a metaphor from Charles Ryder (of “Brideshead Revisited”), between Kate’s wonderful wedding in September and Patrick’s wonderful news in December, you must be drowning in honey. Please feel free to pat yourself on the back just a bit for having raised these two exceptional children – while giving full marks to their own native abilities and determination, of course. And how proud your father – their grandfather – would be of both of them. As with everyone else who has written here, I am looking forward to buying and reading Patrick’s novel – he has a built-in fan base already!

  11. WOW WOW WOW ! Congratulations to Patrick, and to his mother! I look forward to buying a copy (I figured that part is important) and reading it.

  12. That’s so lovely! Congratulations to you both! Looking forward to hearing more about and reading “End of Life.”
