6 Little Happinesses, Or, Saturday Morning at 9:30am

Here are five things I’ve particularly enjoyed this week.

  1. Match boxes my sister gave me as a Christmas stocking present. That’s one at the top of this page. I like these for the imaginative imagery; I also enjoy the strike, flare and sulphur. I use them to light candles; by the way these are still my favorite.
  2. The comments on last week’s blog post,  along with some emails people sent me. Mothers, daughters, aging. Not easy topics, but I appreciate a challenge. I’d rather face difficult emotions than look away.
  3. Photos my friend Jamie Street took of my daughter and me. I showed two on Instagram, here. You can see Jamie’s site with her work here. I think having a professional photographer take honest photos of us with our adult children can be an opportunity to see more deeply. Jamie’s in San Diego, she does family sessions, highly recommended.
  4. Coasters also from my sister. Simple wood squares above. I amuse myself prodigiously by laying them out in small configurations on my butcher block counter. Simple texture art, I tell myself.
  5. Spring. Remember how I said the iris hadn’t bloomed this year? I was very happily wrong. They are busting out like butterflies. Perhaps I should tie them to my head like the duck’s leek crown?

Have a great weekend. Oh, wait, that’s a sixth happiness, making that wish for you.

  1. What a beautiful picture of you and your daughter – it captured perfectly your closeness, as you bend in unison, and your graceful affection as your arm is crooked around your daughter. Wonderful!

    1. @sensitive poet, Thank you. Jamie is a spectacular photographer, for weddings and for family work. I find the photos to be very revealing, more than just an image for me it’s a window into my motherhood. xoxo.

  2. Beautiful pictures of you and your daughter. How nice that you got to spend time with her. Also, is that a new picture of you on the reply to sensitive poet? Love that too. As for the irises, I saw the same resemblance to what I see as green onions on the goose’s head. Finding happiness in small things is a wonderful way to approach life.

    1. @MJ, Thanks! Jamie did the photos when I went down for the residency Match Day. They were taken right after we found out about her going to the Northwest for 7 years:). And you’re right, they are green onions, leeks are far more geometric. “Leek”was just the first word that came to mind, it’s a favorite of mine.

  3. The iris are a lovely surprise…so pretty and dainty.
I love the photo of the two of you…perhaps a new frame might be called for? It could sit in a pace of honour in your home as a reminder of your strong mother daughter bond.
    XO

  4. Oh my goodness I love those matches! They really speak to my sense of the ridiculous.
Our irises are just now starting to form blooms.

    Happy weekend to you!

    :)

  5. Lovely photo of the two of you. It would also make a great portrait in oil. Some portrait painters will take a photo and reproduce it in oil. The northeast is still cold. Sunday is predicted a rain/snow mix. Needless to say, my iris are only an inch above ground. Maybe I’ll see them in June.

  6. Yes, you should definitely tie up a few irises and wear them as a crown. And then have your gifted friend take your photograph :-)

  7. Beautiful photos ( I did see them on IG ) and I absolutely love the coasters. I never like coasters, but these are an exception!

  8. So glad you are enjoying the PF candles! They have some new scents now, and room sprays which also smell delicious <3
