Looking At A Lake, Or, Saturday Morning at 7:13am

My best friend’s daughter is having her wedding party, up in South Lake Tahoe. I’m looking forward to the wedding today–she let me help her customize her wedding dress, and I’ll do her makeup. A very fun privilege.

My son and I drove up yesterday. Actually, technically, he drove, I sat there. One of the many benefits of adult children. You notice you’re ascending especially when pines suddenly take over from oaks. There was still snow by the side of the road, here and there.

And you can smell it in the air, that mineral scent of frozen water.

The rehearsal dinner overlooked a row of boats. It was beautiful. We left in the near dark.

My husband’s work kept him in the Bay Area. So this morning I’m on my own for a little while, to sit on the deck,

look at the mountains,

and think about going for a cup of tea. Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

  1. Nice pix, Lisa! I’ve never been to Tahoe, and I’ve always wondered what it would be like – does look kinda’ cold, though.

Your comments took me back to a time when I helped a friend’s daughter at her wedding: my two responsibilities were to tie the ribbon sash on her Monique Lhuillier two-piece “just so” – achieving the perfect level of casual insouciance to play off the Grace Kelly-ish formality of the of the gown itself – and then to loop up the train “just so” (again!) for the reception. I did feel a bit like a lesser handmaid to Marie Antoinette, but these things mattered to the bride, so I practiced both chores well in advance of the day and both went off beautifully, as did the wedding itself.

I’m sure your own services to the bride will go just as well – and I hope you have a good time dancing with your handsome son at today’s Tahoe wedding!

    1. @Victoire, I bet you did get both bits, “just so”:).

And it’s not cold by the lake right now, temps in the high 70s. The snow is a good deal higher up. The Sierras are gorgeous, worth visiting especially for those who appreciate mountains.

  2. That all seems very fine. I am looking at rain. For yet another day…but I do have a nice cat curled up next to me. Have lots of wedding fun.

  3. Lovely. And what an honor to be asked to do the bride’s makeup and help with the dress! You clearly have a great sense of style, and she recognizes it.

  4. Amazing nature!
Have a wonderful wedding and a weekend (and let us know what are you wearing tonight :-))

  5. Hello Lisa, It appears natural for Bay-area people to drift to Lake Tahoe. I once did some research on San Francisco legend James Lick, and I recall that he had considerable real estate holdings around Lake Tahoe. Lick was quite a character, and fascinating to read about.

  6. Lisa the photos are beautiful. Here’s hoping you have a wonderful time with your son. It seems like mine always talks more on a long ride.
Have a cup of tea for me and inhale deeply.

    1. @luci, Mint tea now in the afternoon, as we speak, and I will clink cups with you over good talks on a long ride. xoxox.

  7. Looks wonderful, Lisa. Sitting on a deck looking at mountains being a favourite activity of mine. When there are mountains to look at. Enjoy the wedding.

  8. What a magical place and very kind of you to wish us well for the weekend, when yours is going to be magnificent – I couldn’t be more pleased for you. What an honour to be chosen to do the bride’s makeup! You clearly have many skills and she an abundance of good taste ;) Best wishes to the bride and groom and a happy time to all the guests.

  9. Such an honor to be asked to do her make up and help customize the grown. Obviously she recognizes and respects your great sense of style. It looks like a beautiful setting. Enjoy!

  10. I know you love views…and weddings, and your son – so pretty perfect weekend. I love Tahoe, although far from LA.

  11. How beautiful! I hope you had a lovely weekend, it sounds like perfection. I thought I had commented, but there have been storms here and the internet has been playing hide and seek..apologies if a duplicate suddenly pops its head out of the ether.
