The more I pay attention to style, the more I find myself singling out certain designers as my pals.
Take Isabel Marant, for example. I own two of her Étoile Isabel Marant jackets, one aubergine tweed, one black. They have served me very well, worn with everything from brown cords to Levi 501s and Doc Martins. Etoile is her non-stratospheric-in-price line, and although these jackets will not last a decade, maybe not even 5 years, they’ll give me a short glorious burst of frequent wear.
Thanks, Isabel.
The thing is, once you get a designer’s aesthetic in your head, you start to look out for their work. And I kept seeing Marant’s iconic Dickers ankle boots. Everywhere.
But Dickers are often sold out online. I looked and looked for a substitute, but found nothing with that silhouette and detail. Or a low enough heel for my walking commute. Lo and behold, Barneys has boatloads in stock.
So now I can wear my purple tweed J. Crew pencil skirt sedately with low heel pumps, or pull on ankle boots and tights to edge towards Artsy. With a peacoat and scarf for walking in San Francisco. By the way, I haven’t bothered to spray the suede. If it’s raining I wear Kamik wellies. Sturdy will out.
When I get to the office I don’t need more than this old Target turtleneck tee to feel dressed. Wood heels make for A-1 stomping, and the turtleneck reads kind of Mod to me. I feel sneaky urges to don a headband, style my hair in a flip, and start doing the Frug. Oh that all our accessories might encourage us to dance.

I love this look on you, marant is one of my favorite designers and you wear her so well. xoxo
Perfect! I have the Acne Pistols which fit the same category, I think, but I now wish I had something with a just slightly lower heel. . . .And you know you look awesome in that last photo, right?
Thanks! The Acnes are similar, as are some at AllSaints. AllSaints came out with the lower-heeled Jodhpurs after I got these Dickers.
Great outfit – I think this is the first time I’ve liked booties with a skirt on anyone.
I’m flattered!
Well done.
Nice Job…I really like the boots and skirt alot.
A+++ ! Love the little bit of Artsy sneaking in there.
For months I would see Katie Holmes photographed in these short beige boots. They looked kinda grungy, kinda messy. So was I blown away when I discovered they were the Isabel Marant Dicker boots that I had no idea I desperately needed! Suddenly they looked so much better when I knew they were Isabel Marant. I’m still on the fence about that beige color. Practical me sees me stepping in or being splased by something two minutes after walking out the door. I think black is a much better choice. Looks great on you!
2nd Photo, you have the stance of just about to stamp the feet and do the flamerco tad difficult with the skirt though!!
You wear the tweed elegantly.Judith
I need castanets! I take your tweed stamp of approval very seriously:).
Agreeing with Judith above, though I believe for flamenco, the shoes need to be more sturdy.
The pose and you are perfect though.
I think these boots are fantastic – and you’ll wear them with everything. I have the Acne Pistol boots too and they’re a bit higher than the Isabel Marant’s, not exactly comfy all-dayers. You have a fabulous figure, by the way!
Love the boots and your style gives them an additional boost. I’m not fond of the current bootie-shoe look, or whatever it is called, but these boots have classic style. I just discovered your blog and I am loving it.
Welcome, Mimi.
You look fabulous and you brought a smile to my day with your post.
OMG the Frug! Totally makes me think of Sweet Charity and being in that musical back when I was in high school… haha.
I love how the boots continue the eye line down as you have it match your tights. Quite chic.

You carry both the clothes and the attitude well!
Very nice styling, and yes, the turtle neck does read mod. A-1 stomping sounds like fun!
It must be quite a bit colder up in the city than it is here on the Peninsula. I’ve been in sandals yesterday and today.
You look absolutely amazing. Very chic. First time I’ve seen the Dickers worn this way but I love it.
Why thank you ma’am!
You have the most amazing figure!
And I’m all for that purple skirt. I have a purple boucle wool A line mini (not very short) that I’ve worn and worn this winter.
Look at you, gorgeous lady.
<3
You *do* wear her incredibly well. Of course it doesn’t hurt that your pencil skirt is absolutely heaven on you. As a grande dame with a hint of artsy cousin, I’m always impressed when someone can pull off chic and sturdy at the same time.
The highest goal:).
You have beautiful legs!
You are one stylish figure.

you look great lisa. and woo hoo the real deal. you probably know i have a knock off-off but i love them and wear them almost every day. i haven’t with a dress or skirt…yet, but you’ve inspired me. xo
I look forward to your photos.
You are amazing.
I love how confident you are.
I’m not really confident, just unable to prevent myself from taking risks.
The way you have that purple skirt popping against all the black in your outfit is stunning, and it’s so nice to see you looking so comfortable in something other than navy.
You wear it all well! Would that my feet were not 40 years older than my brain. ; (
Ha!
i LOVE how you wear your dickers! and you look fabulous in that tweed skirt/tights/ankle boots combo.
Thank you for the ‘spiration!
I love those boots. So gorgeous!
damn. i love those boots. but i cannot bring myself to wear ankle boots with my extra-large calves. i have a pair of lovely rag & bone harrow booties, but never wear them…
I do think of these still as being Grechen-style.
I do hope you’re sitting down Miss Privilege, for I must tell you that I like these. They look very cool and hip and suitable for a gazillion occasions.
Who knew?!

Will wonders never cease;).xoxox.
Love them on you! I have them in beige and in black. Wear them everyday.
You look fierce. I wouldn’t mess with you.
And I want your boots.
Trade you for two cute toddlers on loan for a few days…
Ok, I really need those boots now! Fantastic styling and, as has been said, prose.
Love your work!
Thank you. I love it that you use the term “work,” for this since my day job involves bits, bytes, and lots of analysis. I like to this the blog is its own kind of work.
Ok, I now need those boots! Great styling and prose.
Love your work!

WOWSA.

Umm, does anybody think $600 is a lot for a pair of shoes?
It is!
The outfit is terrific. It would also look good with a shorter version of the skirt (because you have tights on). I would take the skirt 1-2 inches above the knee with those booties and tights.
You look terrific!
Nice posting.
Lisa, you look FAB–adorable booties, but also that amazing purple tweed skirt which must have been made just for you on Artsy days (it’s approaching an emanation of the self). I’d tried it on too at JCrew, and liked it but didn’t buy because it just didn’t look right. This shot, on you–it looks right.
How funny, I have just developed a thing for pencil skirts. I love how yours looks with the cowboy boots, I am stealing that look for sure.
