Change In Plans, Or, Saturday Morning at 8:10am

If you had planned to meet up at Themes+Projects tonight I am so very sorry but I’ve strained my Achilles tendon and won’t be there. I hope anyone who wanted to go to the opening does anyway  – as I said I’m the least of the reasons to attend.

As for how it happened, take one “quick yoga” video that jumps you into downward dog without warmup, one hike up and down several hills, and a somewhat belligerent attitudes toward one’s own weaknesses – tada! here we find ourselves. Or just me. Here I find myself.

They say it will take 4-6 weeks to heal, and the treatment involves the standard Lie On Sofa With Ice And Complain. I go to the podiatrist Wednesday – they will perhaps do some imaging to see how severe this is or is not. I hope they give me crutches as I find immobility to be depressing, infuriating, and stupidly boring.

Meanwhile, I’m dying to write you a post on neutrals and my deep historical love for black worn with brown. Soon. Soon.

Have a wonderful weekend. Maybe move around for me a bit, if you would be so kind.

  1. I am so sorry, Lisa! That’s a long time to be out of action. If you get crutches, maybe you could get yourself to a pool and swim?

  2. Achilles heel injuries are so painful, hope there’s no rupture. My grandmother, my mother (and I) all wore/wear black and brown. My grandmother never wore black shoes or carried a black bag. Always wore brown crocodile, or brown suede with all black. Very elegant.

  3. Ouch! Immobility is so frustrating! Hope it is a straight forward situation—do your physio is all I have to say.. black and brown totally chic

  4. Lisa,
I’m wearing black and brown right now, and look forward to your perspective on the combo (also, please address what to wear with navy). :)
    Until then, rest & restore.

  5. I just got our of a surgical shoe and crutches. It is wonderful to be mobile. I can walk around the house but it’ll be a while before I can walk around the block. Hang in there. It’s a good excuse to sit with you feet up and read.

  6. Hello Lisa, I am sorry to hear about your injury. Take some time to let it heal, of course following medical instructions, and don’t try to do too much too quickly, which is probably your impulse. Get better soon!.

  7. Ouch! So sorry. Think of this as an opportunity to watch all your shows , read, and order take out! Of course since you can’t, all you want to do is be moving about.

Love black and brown. Also black and camel.

    Hugs.

    1. @Annie, A black/brown Pinterest board, what a WONDERFUL laid-up-indefinitely-immobile-and-grouchy idea! Like Kathy, my mother showed me the way to black w/ brown quite early, beginning I think with khaki+black, then onward into the deeper ranges of browns from there. Oh child, do take care. No pushing, ok?

  8. I dance with ladies of a certain age. Not one of them actually leaves the floor in any kind of bouncing action. Our minds say yes, but the body not so much.
Rest Easy! In your case rest and write.

  9. I’m so sorry and hope that you’ll be better very soon
    Fingers crossed

  10. Oh, no! How frustrating! Try to think of it as time to catch up on reading and writing. Rest and heal.

  11. Oh no! I had an Achilles tendon injury about 10 years ago and it took almost a year before it was completely healed…not saying this to scare you, but to let you know it may take longer than you think and to let you know, with me at least, once it was healed, it was like it had never happened. I never needed crutches, but I was walking pretty darn slow for awhile. My doctor instantly pinpointed the cause as my trainer at the gym having me do those heel dips on the stairs and told me that no one should be doing those! He also said “don’t worry, it’s a common injury with athletes” and just remembering it all these years later gives me a glow, thinking that once in my life someone considered me an athlete!

  12. Oh no! There is nothing like a foot injury to put a crimp in things. These injuries take time to heal. Be patient and hard as it is, do as the doc and physio says. Looks like R&R will be the priority. Take care.

  13. You made me laugh out loud with the standard treatment plan.
“Lie On Sofa With Ice And Complain” Ha!
We’ve all been there. A good book and some classic movies will help the time pass more quickly. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  14. Oh no. I had an Achilles tendon injury years ago and it took forever to heal. I hope you fare better. And I love black and brown together, also brown and gray especially charcoal. Similar I guess, But I can’t find a gray bag with brown trim and it drives me crazy.

  15. Here’s an old fashioned but effective remedy: a wee dram of whiskey. It helps to settle the anxiety about not being up and about and gives one an instant medicinal feeling of calm. I confess I did this last August while away on holiday after contracting the most dreadful flu in NZ only 2 days into our 8 day skiing holiday. Not wanting to ruin Hubster’s fun and make him sit miserably with me over the ensuing 6 days, I cheerfully sent him off each morning to the ski slopes and sank back on the couch with a wee nip of single malt (yes, in the morning) which we had purchased at the Duty Free on the way over. It really helped me to relax in a situation that I had no control over, and I was peaceful and calm and happy to watch the clouds roll over the hills outside the window, listening to a murder mystery from Audible. No snow action, but plenty of couch action. Without the angst. I also tore my MCL in February last year skiing (it was a year of illness and injury) and it took 9 months to heal, but I did it with no surgery and lots of physio and keeping to the exercises the physio gave me. I am kind of proud I did it myself. I skied on that knee just last month in Japan, and no pain at all. The wee dram is a traditional remedy and those Scots know how to make a good wee drop.

  16. Ugh!! But just remember that the couch can be a beautiful place – esp if you have incense, tea, books and a heating pad. xo

  17. While you are stretched out icing or heating (as prescribed!) I am going to need to see this black with brown to buy into it. I just don’t see it. I kind of can go with black and navy sometimes but only very carefully. Curious! Hope you receive good imaging news.

  18. Oh bad luck ! I have not yet (cross fingers , touch wood ) had achilles problems but realise it can be nasty . Follow advice & get better soon . Quick yoga sounds like a contradiction in terms !
Black & tan , black & rust yes and I remember a Vogue years ago featuring very dark brown with black patent which was amazing . I can’t generally wear neutrals which make me look corpselike . I have the wrong colouring so will remain a vulgar (half) oriental in forever unchic bright/jewel colours !

  19. I’m surprised they didn’t put you in a boot. My husband has delicate Achilles tendons. One has ruptured in the past (which you do not want) and one developed a fusiform lump. We monitor the state of the Achilles by the size of the lump. Anyway, when the lump is up, the boot goes on and it works. Amazon has them (of course).

It’s the same boot that is dispensed by Tucson Orthopedic for four times the price.
We did not know that there were devices to overcome the disparity between the shoe and boot heights, which becomes important after months in a boot.
    Also available from Amazon.

The boot immobilizes the degree to which your ankle can bend and gives the tendon a rest. Good luck with this, we feel your pain.

  20. Hope you feel better soon, Lisa! I love black with brown as well and can’t wait to read your thoughts. Much love to you, and warm wishes for relaxation and a speedy recovery. <3

  21. Rest well Lisa…sometimes these “layups” can be the best thing for us. I say that begrudgingly having a shoulder injury. It keeps flaring up, I guess when they say “rest”…they really mean it! Lots of reading getting done in the meantime. I hope you find a few things to soothe the “injured” soul! :)
