Not Flattery But Proportion, Or Saturday Morning at 8:48am

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of lunching in San Francisco with a blogger friend and her husband. Tablecloths! Halibut! Consequently I had to doff my sweatpants. How to dress when you want to celebrate but you’d also like to walk a lot of city blocks with your feet intact on arrival?

  1. decide you can push the definition of fancy a bit by wearing your good sneakers. This is California, after all.
  2. remember that often what matters most is looking like you meant to put on these clothes, AKA impunity
  3. decide you owe the world no figure flattery and can substitute the proportion of your clothes for your body’s geometry. Tiny jacket, great big pants that hit right above the ankle.
  4. when in doubt–butterflies and an extra necklace

Details: UNIQLO down jacket (these days their compact jackets are padded, not down), Equipment silk and cotton blouse (no butterflies these days but they do offer cheetahs on a bright red background), Eileen Fisher lantern pants, and VEJA sneakers (all-white version here.)

I put on an extra gold chain, and what you can’t see above, a pair of gold earrings set with tiny diamonds my dad and stepmother gave me for my 21st birthday, 1977. All the vintage charm of a late 70s aesthetic, absent drugs and turmoil. Add some dust and we’re good to go.

May winter bring us all peace, joy, light in good company, and especially peace. Have a good weekend everyone.

  1. I’m obsessed with those earrings! I wish I could see a close up of them on you. So sentimental too. Love your outfit, you look fantastic.

    1. Thank you! And it’s so funny, I didn’t wear these for decades and suddenly they feel right again. With any luck, we’ll come down your way again and if you remind me I’ll wear them LOL.

  2. Your outfit looks perfect for the occasion, and I bet you all enjoyed the meet-up! (Halibut!! Mmmm!)
And may I echo that sweet, sweet comment you left on my last post. xoxo

    1. Friends are friends, no matter how far away. May we meet again some day, maybe even over some halibut;)

  3. According to Habitually Chic, everyone is wearing sneakers (with socks) in Paris so why not in San Francisco :)

  4. Love the earrings. So much fun to put on something you’ve had for a long time and revel in them.

Well, with my feet now, I have everyday sneaker and dressy sneakers. Nobody has ever whined to me about it. I only get compliments.

Hooray for the–well–whatever generation we are!

    1. Aw thanks. It was so nice. Come to San Francisco, I think you’d like the Tadich Grill if you haven’t been there yet.

    1. Thank you! If you say yes to the earrings too they must be good. So weird how our eyes crave different lines in different years.

  5. I’m with you, Lisa. Flattery is so last century. Ha. It’s all about proportion. Your outfit looks perfect. Snazzy, comfortable, and cool. I have to check out the new style Uniqlo jackets now that we have a store Ottawa. My ultra-light down jacket has been worn constantly for the last five years and it shows. Hope the lunch was good.
